The background to the change is that the police in North Rhine-Westphalia have realigned their strategy for greater safety on the roads, cycle paths and freeways at the start of 2024. This strategy has recently been given the state-wide title #LEBEN. The term sums up the efforts of the police to reduce traffic accidents and their sometimes serious consequences. Speed checks are an important aspect of the new specialist traffic strategy.
Speed checks are always unannounced and involve a stop. This form of check enables the driver to be clearly identified and provides the opportunity to explain the necessity and objectives of the police action to the road user in a traffic education interview. This is not a new principle. It was merely emphasized once again in the specialist strategy.
